Many would say that starting a career in the financial services industry in 2001 during the throes of the dot-com crash is less than ideal. I would agree. Fortunately, I was naïve and excited to find something I considered more than just a job.
The ensuing 14 years had a profound impact on who I am today. They are why I broke free from the Wall Street wire-houses and discount-brokerage juggernauts where corporate boards and sales managers determine what’s important instead of the clients. In fact, the client experience I’ve built was forged by those experiences.
After countless conversations with family and friends, I finally shed the handcuffs of proprietary products and sales quotas. The idea was to build a practice from the ground up by rejecting the conventional attitudes of our industry. No more industry jargon. No more pie charts. No more broker speak. So, on January 5, 2015, I founded Canvasback Wealth Management. It was and continues to be a dream realized.
Just as the Canvasback story is a collection of experiences from the past two decades, so is the story of each member of our Canvasback family. You, too, have a story, and we love hearing each one. It allows us to better understand what has made you and your family into the people you are today. And if I want to be an effective partner and leader for my clients, what could be more important?
Oh … and why a duck? I don't remember when I first heard the term “canvasback,” but what could be a better metaphor for our business? You probably remember that old saying about ducks always being calm on the surface, but underneath they paddle like … well, you remember. In today’s world, where sensationalized news is the norm and everyone claims to have the better mouse trap, it’s important for clients to keep calm and stay focused.

What Matters Most
Although a native of West Virginia, I have lived in North Carolina since moving to Wilson to begin college in 1992. I now live in Raleigh with my wife, Marissa, daughter, Jerri, and son, Forde.
I come from a blue-collar background. My work ethic and desire to serve others came directly from my parents. In all my years growing up, I don’t recall my mother or father ever missing a day of work. Their dedication to providing for the family regardless of any obstacles taught me lessons that can’t be found in books. Those lessons still serve me today, thus our motto, “Relentless by Nature.”
When not at the office, I prefer to be outdoors. Whether hiking with my daughter, taking walks with my son, camping with my wife, trout fishing in the mountains or putting hammer to nail, I simply prefer the outdoors.
Matthew J. Greenan
Matt got his start in financial services in 2009 with Navigon Financial Group. He later joined TD Ameritrade in 2012 before moving to TIAA CREF in 2015. On November 4, 2020, Matt officially joined Canvasback Wealth Management, LLC.
In 2007, Matt completed his double major at North Carolina State University. He earned his Bachelor of Science in business management and Bachelor of Science in parks, recreation & tourism management. Upon graduation, Matt’s first job out of college was in the finance department for the Charlotte Hornets as an analyst.
What Matters Most
I was born and raised right here in Raleigh. I grew up playing soccer and swimming year-round, which led me to the NC State water polo team in college. During my swimming career, I enjoyed teaching people of all ages how to swim.
That passion for helping others still drives me today, and it’s what led me to Canvasback Wealth Management in 2020. Fast forward to today, and I’m right where I’ve always wanted to be — helping our clients gain clarity and confidence with their money.
Why did I join Canvasback? I met Brannon in 2012 when I started with TD Ameritrade. During our time there, we developed a friendship that lasted beyond his departure to go independent. During a round of golf in the summer of 2020, Brannon popped the question. He asked me to join Canvasback Wealth Management. While leaving the safety and security of a mammoth firm like TIAA CREF would be too much for most, it was an easy decision for me. Having worked with Brannon, I knew we shared the same values and principles. And the rest, as they say, is history.
I live in Cary with my wife, Laura, our two boys, Max and Conner, and our two dogs. Most often, you will find us outside biking, running, camping or taking the boat we built onto the lake.
